And How Vedic Astrology Reconnects Us to the Cosmos
Have you ever felt like your Sun sign doesn’t fully capture who you truly are—like there’s more to your story than what the stars have told you?
You’re not alone. I, Joni Patry, made a significant shift over 20 years ago when I transitioned from working on Western tropical astrology to fully embracing Vedic Astrology, rooted in the stars themselves.
And I was recently pleased—though not surprised—to see major media outlets, like Good Morning America or the New York Times, shining a spotlight on this.
Here’s what most people don’t realize:
Over millennia, Earth’s wobble, known as precession, has slowly shifted the true positions of the stars. The actual star locations have moved approximately 24 degrees backward, meaning your familiar Sun sign isn’t quite where the stars truly are today.
Why does this matter? Because Vedic (Sidereal) astrology works directly with the real positions of the stars and constellations. It provides a more precise and timeless map of your personality, purpose, and spiritual journey—aligned with the cosmos as it exists now, not 2,000 years ago.
Why Western and Vedic Astrology Differ
- Western astrology relies on the tropical system, which is based on the Sun and Earth’s seasons. The start of Aries always marks the March equinox—the beginning of spring—regardless of where the stars actually are.
- Vedic astrology uses the sidereal system, which aligns with the actual positions of the constellations and stars, maintaining a direct connection with the night sky that hasn’t changed.
The Cosmic Shift You Need to Know
The stars drift slowly backwards around the zodiac because of precession. Imagine Earth wobbling like a spinning top—this causes the apparent position of the stars to shift over thousands of years.
It takes roughly 26,000 years for this cycle to complete—meaning the original placement of your Sun sign no longer matches the star’s true location today. About 2,000 years ago, the two systems aligned. Today, they’ve separated by about 24 degrees—roughly the width of one entire zodiac sign (30 degrees).
Most of us have unknowingly shifted into a different Sun sign than we thought, based on the true position of the stars.
The Power of the Real Stars
In Vedic astrology, your full birth chart isn’t just about your Sun sign; it’s built on the precise star positions of all the planets. These true placements have remained consistent over thousands of years, carrying deep meanings:
- Aldebaran remains the "Red Eye of Taurus"—a luminous star that holds its meaning across ages.
- Regulus continues to be Leo’s regal, heart-centered star.
- Antares is still the "Heart of Scorpio"—a star of war and strength.
Because Vedic astrology emphasizes these real star locations, it provides an accurate, timeless blueprint of your soul’s path—one that remains unchanged and true to the cosmos.

Ik vind gewoon top
Thanks.. I was enlightened over twenty years ago by a Vedic astrologer I met named Bryan McRae aka Sudharshana. I was always read as a Libra/Scorpio/Libra in Western astrology and while it had some truth to it, it never really felt “right”. When Sudharshana read for me he said I was actually a Virgo/Libra/Virgo and have a very powerful chart ..one of the 5 great yogas I believe he said. We have been in contact for many years but recently he has not been responding and I heard he was sick… wondering if you could fill in where he left off..
